Overall this article was very informative. Introducing a literature based research component for first year students is very desirable. It is clear from the article that this increased student engagement. Having student led discussions is an excellent way to address bringing communication skills into a science students curriculum early. As this is one important student competency that is often hard deliver and to assess, this program does a great job. One drawback to their assessment methods, though is the use of only student self report as a measurement of outcomes. This is often a problem because of student over inflation of learning. This article discusses the use of RISE faculty but could easily be adaptable to institutions that don't have the RISE program. It is clear that you can use any collection of research active faculty.
