Students in a biochemistry were asked to create a crossword puzzle of at least 20 terms used in their course. The results were that students felt that they understood the terms (vocabulary) much better. Test scores did not show any significant gain though. It is interesting that a university used this as a teaching method and wrote a very high level article about it. Elementary and middle school teachers have been using this method of teaching for at least forty years!!
