These teachers used a local (if man altered) watershed as a theme for a series of lessons on earth, life, and physical sciences. It hooked students, because it was within walking distance of the school and in an area they were familiar with and could continue to study outside of school. The teachers did not have a lot of student inquiry, but the potential is there for student developed projects as they become more comfortable with this style of learning (from their presentation, this is a unit in progress). I think an action project as a culminating activity would have been a wonderful end to this lesson, but the idea of seeing how the earth changes slowly over time both in the present and the past hits on many standards and I know students are always fascinated with streams, mine enjoy the water testing aspect a lot as well.
