Another widespread misconception perpetually being spread by teachers and textbooks alike is revealed. Probably every science teacher in the 21st Century who has taught about airflow and weather has used some of the demonstrations mentioned in this article to explain the Bernoulli Effect. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so please DO read Dr. Robertson’s humbling explanation about why we science teachers are so easily confused. This article is very hands-on in that the readers are directed to try out different activities in order to confront any misconceptions they may have. The bottom line is that one can only apply the Bernoulli Principle’s explanation to those circumstances involving a continuous flow of air or water. Read the article to learn about another very common but little known scientific principle called the Coanda Effect. Dr. Robertson is among the first to admit that he himself had to unlearn what he was taught and continued to teach and write about up until just a couple of years ago. This was an enlightening article that reminds us all why it is important to continually question our own acquired knowledge. It is never too late to teach an old dog a new trick or two.
