Being a visual learner, I appreciate the value of an image. Yes, for me ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This was the saying for a NYC newspaper. We often teach the way we learn and that has been true for me. The term literacy use to refer to being able to read, write, and do basic mathematics. Now literacy is much broader and includes the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate in a variety of forms. This newest generation is hooked on visual images through digital devices. It only makes sense to educate them that way as well.

Jo Anne Vasquez makes that case that our students will need the visual tools, photographs, charts,
diagrams, and graphic symbols, to meet the demands of this digital age. Recent research in brain research show the need to link linguistic and visual representation to improve student retention and conceptual understanding. The net generation needs to incorporate these visual thinking tools to help them mentally organize information. Visual literacy should be an essential part of science instruction today.
