Each year the Science and Children journal shares a list of books with annotated bibliographies to consider for use in classrooms across America. In order to make the list, a trade book has to have substantial science content, contain information that is clear, accurate and up-to-date, and be free of gender, ethnic, and socio-economic biases among other criteria. The 2012 picks are highlighted in this article. It is a convenient way to peruse several preselected texts to consider for personal and professional libraries. Two that caught my eye are: The Plant Hunters: True Stories of Their Daring Adventures to the Far Corners of the Earth by Anita Silvey and Faces From the Past: Forgotten People of North America by James M. Deem. Enjoy the submissions for this past year and learn how to participate in the next annual review of Outstanding Science Trade Books.
