Writing in science can encompass three areas. One is format or the understanding and usage of grammar. Another is understanding of the content of material and lastly is writing or the ability to communicate what has been learned. The authors of this article created a writing portfolio to ensure students learn from the comments teachers write on returned papers. This article provides grading criteria, examples of comments found on papers, and a chart called ‘Analysis of Writing Sheet’ that students use to log in returned writing assignments. By using this process students can see over a period of time their strengths and weaknesses.
