Students placed in science high school classes have varying math abilities unlike math classes where students are learning one specific math. This can often lead to problems in the science classroom. Looking at a student’s math proficiency on standardized tests can help the science teacher figure out a student’s math difficulties. Providing an activity that includes math calculations can be used to pre-assess student’s math abilities or lack of abilities. Math skills are just as important in a science classroom.

This editorial takes a practical look at how the lack of adequate math skills can hinder students in learning science. A suggestion is made to administer a pre-assessment test on the math skills required for success in your science class throughout the year. From this pre-assessment a teacher can better plan what skills require review or need to be taught prior to introducing the science activity. In consideration of the new Common Core Standards in Math, this article provides a practical suggestion that should help science teachers integrate math more efficiently into their lesson planning.
