This article is a current summary about nuclear energy in a column published in the NSTA Science Scope Journal in an effort to address energy and climate concerns and the use of renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The author briefly describes the nuclear fission process, how uranium is converted into fuel pellets, and the Pros and Cons (health effects, costs, environmental impact, radioactive waste and storage, and nuclear disasters). In a timeline dating from the 1930’s, with Fermi conducting experiments with neutrons to the 2011 Fukushima, Japan’s power plant disaster, the author shows the various pivotal points in the modern history of nuclear energy. Palliser’s excellent set of references and resources also provides important information for anyone needing further questions answered.

This article is a brief overview of nuclear energy. Starting with what it is the reader learns about how it impacts the USA, an overview of the history behind using it, uranium conversion, power plants, pro’s in terms of cost and efficiency and cons in terms of health risks and historical disasters, as well as issues with the storage of waste materials. This is a great article to present to a middle school student to introduce them to energy in our society.
