While there is limited evidence to show whether or not there is a relationship “Between student learning and computer usage, there is a relationship between the positive effect on student achievement when combined with student-centered practices.” Student centered practices include problem solving, deeper level questioning strategies, repeated investigations and learning from each other. Interestingly, if you use a computer to complete traditional tasks such as copying notes or doing homework, negatively impacted achievement. I loved the quote, “Activities not directly related to knowledge construction are not usually associated with improved academic achievement.” The article does an excellent job of sharing how the use of Flash interactives can be used to enhance student learning of lab investigations. At no time do the authors advocate computer simulations replace actual hands-on labs, but make excellent points on how these interactives allow students the opportunity to re-visit labs they have already performed, or preview those to come. Through skillful use of interactives, teacher questioning and students recording the results of their investigations, students have the chance to evaluate their thinking of the Science that occurred. Of particular value are the “Guidelines for using computers.” Technology has its place in the learning environment. What we need to be ever mindful of though, is technology, or in this case, computers must be a tool for learning.

Wanting to know about the effects of computer usage upon student achievements, the authors investigated three examples of computer use designed to enhance learning. The three activities used were: 1) “Balloon in a Bottle” followed by “Funnel in a Bottle”, 2) “Plastic Bag in a Wide Mouthed Jar” and 3) “Bouncing Particles”. Each activity includes Activity Worksheets and uses a Flash movie as an instructional tool (web site listed) when collecting data for the activity. The authors wrote and justified each step listed, making the clarity of what they were attempting to show clear. There is also a Guideline for using computers that is included. The activities provided, plus their justifications are very helpful to any teacher wanting to know how curriculum can progress from observable properties, objects, and relationships to deductive reasoning using computer activities that focus on student knowledge construction.
