The article describes two activities you can do with students to model disease transmission with students to help them to understand how one or two individuals can infect a population. The author ties the activity to SARS (bird flu) and AIDS but it is equally valid for the common cold or other types of flu. Because of the chemicals used, this activity is focused at high school level, but I can 't help but wonder if it could not be adapted with less toxic materials and used at earlier levels as well, since this ties into the importance of hygiene which is addressed in elementary and middle levels. The earlier article link is inactive and to reference the article mentioned (although the procedure is clearly defined in this article) you would have to visit a library.
