The abundance of Kudzu—a Japanese vine—in the state of Mississippi provides a natural pathway for discovery opportunities. All over the South in late spring and summer, Kudzu wreaks havoc; the vine can overtake buildings if left unchecked and often winds around road and highway signs. Kudzu must have more uses than its original purpose, which was to help prevent soil erosion in the Dust Bowl era. In the inquiry-based activity described here, students investigate new uses for this ubiquitous vine.
