Although nearly every state contains karst topography, little attention is given to it or to discussing the importance of ground water. The authors do an excellent job explaining karst topography and explaining how scientists determine underground flow patterns of water. They also provide an easy activity that models scientific field work. This activity can be the starting point for a unit on the importance of underground aquifers for human needs such as agriculture and the effects of over-withdrawal. This article could be improved by providing a more in-depth discussion of the activity described.
