Involving Students in Assessment

by: Janet E. Coffey

While much of the responsibility for classroom assessment lies with teachers, students also play an important role in meaningful assessment activity. Bringing students into the assessment process is a critical dimension of facilitating student learning and in helping to provide students with the tools to take responsibility for their own learning. The author examines the role students can play in assessment through a closer look at the middle school program where students actively and explicitly engage in all stages of the assessment process.
