Scientific practices are the activities that scientists engage in as they investigate the natural world. These daily practices include asking questions, designing investigations, finding, incorporating, and using information, collecting and organizing data, creating protocols and graphs for data interpretation, and applying the results to create scientific arguments and explanations. The practices presented in this chapter provide the vision and the direction for science teachers to create and implement curricula that promote classroom cultures where scientific practice is the means of exploring phenomena. Through such a process students develop deep understanding of fundamental science concepts because they actively construct understanding through experience.
