While this chapter is a little dated (refers to Netscape and some of the weblinks are either inactive or no longer maintained) the basic information is sound, using online databases can expand the information available for student research and allow for more connections between data and effects on various topics. Even though this article was written in the late 1990's many of the Web Based Instructional sites are not only still active but have expanded and diversified. After all this time that shows the interest by teachers (and students!) in pusuing these opportunities for authentic reseach with practical artifacts. Information (and many of the websites) address lessons from grades 3-16 but most focus on environmental and earth science topics - there is a definite lack of physcial science and only a few biology activities. Perhaps this is something that we teachers can remedy!
