There is widespread agreement that science teaching is more than a career—it’s a “calling,” and it’s the “discovery” that hooks teachers into doing science. This chapter presents “The Elements of the Profession” sidebar, and if one identifies the 12 critical elements of professional life, as the authors do, some positive changes can be made in teachers’ work lives, and in their status as professionals.
