This little chapter will be helpful to any elementary (or even middle school) teacher who is struggling with incorporating meaningful writing into the science classroom. A solid practical example is used to depict a lesson that starts with an inquiry and is followed up by discussion, reflection, and a “learning log” where students explain the thinking that led them to their conclusions. By providing prompts to scaffold the writing process, students thinking can be uncovered for assessment. Embedding writing into science lessons will also help teachers address common core standards.
