Evolutionary Steps: A Stairway-Created Display of the History of Life—How a Xavier University Biology Class Plots Earth's Major Evolutionary Events

Journal of College Science Teaching—November 1997

The students at Xavier University's general biology course learn about evolution by ascending a stairway in a science building. Along the stairwell walls students examine fossils and explanatory texts while the ascending stairs represent a climb through time. This article describes how to exhibit the fossils and present explanatory text materials, as well as the fossil display's use of a calendar year to condense vast time spans into manageable blocks of months, days, and hours.
