Research and Teaching: Student Self-Assessment of Higher-Order Cognitive Skills in College Science Teaching

Journal of College Science Teaching—November 1997

A wide consensus exists among researchers that the development of students' abilities to ask questions, reason, problem solve, and think critically—in short, higher-order cognitive skills (HOCS)—should become a central focus of current science education reform. As students adopt HOCS-oriented learning strategies, it will require taking an active role in the learning process, including performing self-assessment and monitoring progress to assume more responsibility for their own learning.
