Using the Past in Class: Learning from historical models of cell membranes

The Science Teacher—November 2001

Studying the history of science shows students how science is a process that occurs over time. A sample lesson in which secondary life science students examine the history of the development of the cell membrane model is included. After discussing the work of various scientists who suggested models of the cell membrane, students create their own models based on that information. The historical model is then presented so students can compare their models to the work of the scientists.
