Case Study: Uretero What? Gynecological Health Issues, Pregnancy, and an Infant With a Birth Defect

Journal of College Science Teaching—January/February 2009

This case study follows the life of a successful career woman who is faced with a series of medical problems and career decisions. The purpose of this case study is for students to apply systems-level physiology as they explore a pregnancy with medical complications and discuss situations involving life-changing decisions prompted by modern medical technologies. Previous knowledge of the basics of the female reproductive system as well as the renal and urinary tract anatomy and physiology would be helpful to students in advance of this case study. However, the case is intended as a teaching tool through which new knowledge is gained simultaneously while running this case by seeking outside reference information from valid sources as outlined in the teaching notes.
