Editorial: Unintentional Verbosity

Writing hurts, even for individuals who do it professionally. Consequently, because the birth of an essay, an article, or a book is so painful, we come to have a special affection for our words. This is both natural and necessary, but it makes editing our own work agony at best. Editing work in which you’ve become entangled is often impossible. Therefore, in this month’s column, the author discusses the importance of an editor, and offers some helpful suggestions for enlisting a capable colleague in another area of training.
