Science Scope—December 2008

Saving the world is a pretty lofty goal. One that sounds so unattainable that most of us instinctively want to leave that up to the physicists, the brain surgeons, the chemists, and the environmental researchers. You know, the people who have enough brainpower to run a small country. Have you ever stopped to think that a common person could in, his or her small way, be saving the world? This heart-rending account introduces you to one such individual—Andy Cassady. This beloved teacher imbued his love of science upon all those who were ever fortunate enough to enter into room B-108 in Markesan Middle School in Markesan, Wisconsin.
