Haiku and Science—Observing, Reflecting, and Writing about Nature: Using an Art Form that Demands Careful Observation of the Natural World

Journal of College Science Teaching—March/April 1999

Haiku and science both focus on nature and require excellent observational abilities. This article describes the characteristics of haiku and a haiku assignment used in college biology courses. Students carefully observed the natural world, wrote haiku, and shared the poems after reflecting on their observations. Students felt that writing haibu made them more observant and appreciative of nature.
