Measuring Molecules: An interdisciplinary lesson incorporates ecology and mathematics

The Science Teacher – May 2000

This interdisciplinary project investigates the enormous environment-polluting power of uncontrolled petroleum products. While focusing on mathematics and science, this exercise helps students to conceptually transfer the ecological ramifications of topping off the tank from direct measurements to indirect visualization. This type of simulation exercise forces students to apply critical thinking skills to actual phenomena. It also allows teachers to gauge the level of understanding students possess of the process skills necessary for performing science.
