Scope on Safety: Safety is for everyone

Science Scope—February 2003

The National Science Education Standards reject any situation where some people are discouraged from pursuing science and excluded from opportunities to learn it. In concert with the Standards are federal laws and regulations mandating equal access and full inclusion to the maximum extent possible in the general education curriculum for all students. As a result, science teachers often struggle to meet the needs of each of their students while maintaining high standards and attempting to raise the educational bar. Therefore, the suggestions and resources described in this column can help science teachers to successfully provide equitable access to hands-on science education for all students in a safe learning environment.
