Science Sampler: Clever with weather

Science Scope—February 2011

In eighth-grade Earth science at Louisville Middle School in Louisville, Colorado, students learn how large-scale weather patterns such as the jet stream and weather fronts interact to generate local weather conditions. The authors have developed a modeling activity to show students how these weather factors are relevant to their lives. By using the model, students could see how elements such as buildings, ground-surface type, and trees can impact wind and temperature. In the activity described in this article, students learn about data analysis and presentation. They learn how data can be analyzed in different ways to answer a question and how computers can be useful in this analysis.
