Sound Ecology

The Science Teacher—April 2000

Problem-based learning is a powerful tool that motivates students to learn problem solving through investigation and research. To introduce this learning style, the author designed a unit for a tenth grade biology class that focuses on the organisms and ecological features of Long Island Sound. This article describes how students applied problem-based learning to environmental questions.
