Wow, it is amazing what fourth graders can do. This article describes an engineering challenge that uses Lego Mindstorms. One thing I found that was great is that the teacher had several different levels of difficulty for the challenge and students choose what level they wanted to work at and then the teacher formed them into groups. This made it easier for groups to work cohesively. Students went through the Engineering Process of Problem Statement, Research, Design, Create, Test, and Improve. The author says that in an authentic problem-solving challenge the teacher does not know the outcome ahead of time!!

I am super excited to try this out with my students. I am curious what kinds of lab/recording sheets you had them work through. This would be great to use as a connection with language arts as well-students could create a story around their minifigure. So many ideas!
