Using Picture Books to Guide Inquiry Following the 5E Model: Moon Phases and Models (5th grade) Collection

Explanations of the phases of the Moon as well as seasons are very challenging to students as well as adults. Students have many misconceptions about the Moon. One of the most common misconceptions is that Moon phases are caused by Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon. This idea is challenged during the Moon modeling activity. Scientists find answers by making careful observations, through the use of models, and communicating with other scientists. This Collection of resources were used to support a professional learning breakout session, which participants have the opportunity to be the scientists and learn how they can have their students be the scientists in their classrooms in order to come up with some answers about the phases of the Moon.
