Are you an elementary educator working to enhance your knowledge of the crosscutting concepts and how they can be leveraged to strengthen science and engineering learning in K-12 classrooms?  Register to participate in the Crosscutting Concepts: A Professional Book Study for Elementary Educators, taking place in February/March 2022! The first web seminar in the series is scheduled to take place February 23, 2022.

In this four-seminar series, participants explore the crosscutting concepts as one of the three dimensions described in the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards, and their critical role for science teaching and learning. Particular attention will be given to how the crosscutting concepts can serve as tools to make sense of phenomena and design solutions to problems and how they can broaden access to science for all students.

NSTA has developed an Online Book Study around the book, Crosscutting Concepts: Strengthening Science and Engineering Learning.  This book clarifies how the crosscutting concepts are an essential part of three-dimensional learning. The book also provides a wealth of ideas for instruction and examples taken from classrooms to show the power of crosscutting concepts across science and engineering disciplines and across grade bands or levels.

During the online book study, educators attend live web seminars and participate in asynchronous discussions with the presenters, Kate Soriano and Jessica Holman.  The web seminars support use of the book to deepen participants’ understanding of the crosscutting concepts.

Program Dates:

The four live web seminars are scheduled from 7:30-9:00 PM Eastern time (4:30 – 6:00 PM PT) on the dates below:

  • February 23, February 28, March 7, and March 14, 2022.

During the book study participants have access to:

  • A moderated private forum for group discussions with other book study participants
  • Digital resources and all NSTA online community tools (My Library, My Profile, Discussion Forums)
  • All archive versions of the web seminars to watch on-demand.

Participants will receive a certificate from NSTA after each live web seminar (1.5 hours per web seminar) as evidence of their attendance and participation.

About the Book:

You can order Crosscutting Concepts: Strengthening Science and Engineering Learning by Jeffrey Nordine and Okhee Lee (eds.)  The central goal of this book is to clarify the nature and potential of CCCs to strengthen science and engineering teaching and learning. Note: The registration fee below DOES NOT include the cost of the book. The book must be purchased separately.
