What is an approach that science educators can use to create assessment tasks that support instructional practice and students’ three-dimensional learning? Participate in this book study scheduled on September 10, 17, 24, and October 1, 2024, to learn more.

Join the authors of the NSTA Press Book, Creating and Using Instructionally Supportive Assessments in NGSS Classrooms, to learn how to create your own assessment tasks that can be used in instructionally supportive ways that benefit teaching and learning for all students! The kind of assessment tasks needed for today’s science classrooms must assess the active and integrated learning that comes from instruction that engages students in using and applying disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. Importantly, developing these tasks for all students means using relevant phenomena and scenarios that create interest and curiosity about the world and providing multiple ways for students to communicate what they know and are able to do. This series is ideal for those who seek extended time and guidance to experience a systematic and principled process for creating three-dimensional tasks that can be used every class period and from year to year. Each step of this process provides an opportunity for learning that will increase your knowledge of three-dimensional instruction and assessment.

This book study will immerse you in the Next Generation Science Assessment (NGSA) design process that:

  • Provides a concrete and principled multi-step approach for creating classroom-based tasks that support students in using disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts and scientific and engineering practices,
  • Encourages the design of tasks that differ from traditional formats of assessment and that a wide range of students will find meaningful and accessible,
  • Supports the use of assessments to promote student learning of the three dimensions of scientific knowledge,
  • Emphasizes using assessment design to deepen one’s professional knowledge for teaching and
  • Meets the important requirements for assessing three-dimensional learning.

Program dates and times:

The four live web seminars are scheduled from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Eastern time.  Registered participants will have access to all recorded versions of the web seminars to watch on-demand.

Specific program dates are below:

  • September 10, 17, 24, and October 1, 2024

Interested participants can purchase Creating and Using Instructionally Supportive Assessments in NGSS Classrooms (e-book or print) separately from registration. Please note that purchasing Creating and Using Instructionally Supportive Assessments in NGSS Classrooms is not required. All participants will be able to fully participate with or without the book.

About Certificates:

Participants will receive a certificate from NSTA after each live web seminar for attending the live program AND for completing the post-program survey.

Registering a Group of Teachers:

Science leaders can sponsor a group of educators and save on registration.

  • $1,500 flat fee per cohort of 25 participants, regardless of their NSTA membership status. Additional participants (beyond 25) will be charged $60 per person.
