3D Magnetic Fields: Making Meaningful Connections

by: Thomas O'Brien

In this activity, a sealed, transparent container filled with a clear, colorless oil and several tablespoons of iron filings is shaken and a cylindrical magnet is suspended in the middle of the container. Beautiful magnetic field lines are made visual as the iron filings are suspended in a specific 3D pattern that changes when influenced by outside magnetic fields. Both teachers and grades 5-12 students need to understand that learning science is not about students mentally achieving unrelated facts for later retrieval on a test. It is about making sense of—or making meaning from—natural phenomena in light of a limited number of conceptual themes and far-reaching scientific theories.
