Alternative Forms of Assessment for The College Science Laboratory

by: Kerry L. Cheesman
edited by: Thomas R. Lord, Donald P. French, and Linda W. Crow

A basic definition of alternative assessment is any type of evaluation that does not use traditional forms of paper-and-pencil testing. Too often new forms of teaching and learning are coupled with traditional forms of student assessment rather than with forms that fit with the new ways of teaching. Therein lies the rationale for using alternative forms of assessment in the undergraduate science laboratory. By using new and different forms of assessment, laboratory experiences can challenge students to grow in enduring understanding.
