Design Challenge Units and Research on Learning

edited by: Helen Meyer, Anant R. Kukreti, Debora Liberi, and Julie Steimle

Chapters 1–3 provide background information and introduce the particular engineering design process (EDP) used in the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science (CEEMS) program, as well as how the design challenge unit framework connects with current education standards and reforms. In this chapter, segments from a class are used to demonstrate what the teaching and learning processes in engineering-based instruction look like and how they connect with learning sciences research. The chapter’s summary highlights “takeaways” that can help teachers as they develop design challenge units that align with current education research findings. A list of materials, teacher background information, references, resources, assessments, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Preface, About the Editors and Contributors, Appendix, and Index.
