Does a Magnet Pick up Any Kind of Metal?

by: Page Keeley and Rand Harrington

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about magnetic materials. It is designed to determine whether students recognize that only certain metals interact with magnets. Use a steel fork—not stainless steel—to demonstrate the probe scenario. The probe can be extended to include three types of materials—magnetic, non-magnetic and permanent magnets. It is best used with elementary and middle school students. A materials list, teacher notes, standards, assessment, safety notes, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
