Fieldwork can teach our students that although controlled experiments are one route to scientific knowledge, they are by no means the only route (McComas 1996). In this chapter the authors have selected a small set of field-based geology education and biology education research studies to demonstrate that the college science education research literature can help you teach your students more effectively in informal science education settings, while making your job and life more interesting. They begin with a field site study conducted by their research group, and then summarize and discuss several studies that may apply to college geology and college biology teachers.
