How Can You Magnetize a Nail?

by: Page Keeley and Rand Harrington

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about magnetization. It is designed to find out how students would represent, at the particle level, a nonmagnetized versus a magnetized nail. The probe is best used with middle and high school students once they have some familiarity with the behavior of magnets and magnetic materials. It should be revisited after students have had instructional experiences to learn about magnetization with an opportunity to revise their initial ideas and representation. A materials list, teacher notes, standards, assessment, safety notes, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
