How Does the Use of Instructional Models Support Teaching for Conceptual Understanding?

by: Richard Konicek-Moran and Page Keeley

This chapter is devoted to describing instructional models developed over time by teachers, curriculum developers, and researchers, including a current research-based model that explicitly supports the practices of science—Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI). The three best known models focused on are the Learning Cycle Model, the 5E Instructional Model, and the Conceptual Change Model (CCM). We will continue to examine instructional strategies that support conceptual understanding and can be used within the instructional models discussed in this chapter. Reflection questions are provided at the end of the chapter, as well as suggestions for available NSTA resources. Teacher background information, standards, and assessments are included. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, About the Authors, Introduction, References, and Index.
