Innovations and Opportunities for STEM Education

by: Rodger W. Bybee

STEM represents an innovative approach to school programs. Although there is a history of innovation in American education, STEM is unique in that it incorporates concepts, practices, contexts, and competencies for the 21st century. Chapters 17 and 18 are included in this book selection. Chapter 17 focuses on using a question-and-answer format to discuss some critical innovations for STEM education, both formal and informal within the K–12 grade span. Chapter 18 focuses on a vision and teachers’ leadership for STEM. STEM education cannot replace current school programs but can complement longstanding programs, such as science and mathematics. In the concluding discussion, some key points are restated that are the basis for clarifying the vision for STEM leadership, beginning with a purpose for STEM education. Teacher background information is also included in this book selection, as well as the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Author, References, and Index.
