Is It a Change?

by: Patrick Brown

Chapters 6–13 share grades 3–5 model lessons for putting the “explore-before-explain” mind-set into practice. This lesson is one step in helping students develop an understanding of the conservation of matter that takes place during a chemical change, and it addresses all three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The lesson includes a prior knowledge assessment probe, a demonstration, students’ evidence-based claims, and an explanation from the teacher. The activity box included is meant to provide a professional development experience and promote job-embedded learning. Teacher background information, safety notes, standards, and assessments are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Preface, Introduction, References, and Index.
