For middle school science teachers, one of the most fundamental changes involves curriculum, instruction, and assessments. This chapter uses performance expectations from the life sciences as the basis for a description of how Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) might be translated to a middle school classroom. First, two performance expectations are introduced that describe competencies or learning outcomes for middle school life sciences and then a description of an instructional sequence, including an assessment.
