PISA 2006 Assessment of Attitudes Toward Science

by: Yasushi Ogura
edited by: Rodger W. Bybee and Barry J. McCrae

Science teachers want students to develop interest in science and value in learning science. Attitudes toward science play an important role in students' decisions to develop their science knowledge, pursue careers in science, and use scientific concepts and methods productively. There have been many studies on attitudes toward science but PISA Science 2006 is the first time in the history of science education that comprehensive and comparative data across countries has been collected. This chapter describes a selection of results from PISA 2006 concerning students' attitudes toward science and the implications for science teachers.
