The Purposes of STEM Education

by: Rodger W. Bybee

STEM should address the part of students’ education that prepares them to become responsible citizens. Although important, K–12 STEM education’s primary aim is not preparation for a specific STEM career but should contribute to the workforce of the 21st century and help students become aware of STEM-related careers. This chapter focuses on what knowledge, values, skills, and sensibilities are essential for STEM literate citizenship in the 21st century. This book selection includes teacher background information, along with the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Author, References, and Index.
