I really like the strategy that create a safe communication for reading. I was too shy to read in my second grade. Nobody wanted to read aloud. When we were asked to read together, they just read gently and casually. I tried to read with emotion and thinking but they just laughed at me. So I believe the teacher should encourage all students to share their ideas and stories first. Engage them in the communication part.

Defining "reading" is central to the discussion of how we teach it and children learn it. It obviously must be more than just being able to say the words on the page - it is about communicating ideas and making meaning. The rest of the chapter is devoted to implementing strategies that will help students interpret the words and develop meaning. Overarching strategies including comprehension coding, structured reading groups, and a group of problem-solving strategies. Identifying and defining new vocabulary in context, using diagrams and illustrations, predicting based on text signals, chunking, and sharing using pause, retell, and share are central strategies. A rubric is provided for student self reflection on the reading process.
