The Reading Strategies

by: Jodi Wheeler-Toppen

This chapter contains information on teaching reading strategies that can help students improve their reading and help them to begin to view reading as an active search for meaning. The first step is to create a classroom culture in which students feel safe exploring new ways of thinking about reading. In this chapter, the two strategies focused on are: Think-Alouds, to talk about what we are thinking as we read (comprehension coding) and Peer Conversation, where students share with each other how they made sense of the text (reading groups). A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Image Credits, and Index.
