The Role of Leadership in Fostering Inquiry-Based Learning and Teaching

by: Emily van Zee

In this chapter, the author first address the concepts of inquiry and leadership presented in the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996). Then presents examples of leaders who foster inquiry-based learning and teaching within the context of classrooms, local communities, schools and districts, college science classrooms, teacher preparation programs, and professional development experiences. The author also notes ways in which she has used many of these examples in courses designed to prepare prospective and practicing teachers to (a) foster inquiry-based learning and teaching and (b) become active researchers in their own classroom.
