Project Dragonfly at Miami University was founded on the premise that the most powerful way to engage children in learning is to celebrate their voices, to invite them into the community of discovery, and to allow them to see themselves as agents of science. Project Dragonfly asks youth to share questions, test ideas, author knowledge, take action, and communicate with peers through publically valued forums and media. In this chapter, the authors describe three principles that have served them over the years through widely different media, audiences, and geography settings—principles they believe may be useful for those seeking to support a culture of inquiry. They chose principles that, while consistent with the NSES, are too often overlooked in the U.S. education system. The uniting theme throughout is participation—what it means to participate—and how inquiry can be used to foster genuine participation among students, teachers, and communities.
