Tasting

edited by: William C. Ritz and William Straits

This activity is for observing and tasting foods that are salty, sour, sweet, or bitter. Give each student a piece of four different foods, such as tortilla chip, pineapple, pickle, and green apple. As children taste each one, encourage a conversation by asking them to describe how it tastes. Have the students eat a second piece while holding their nose. This will encourage a discussion with students about how our sense of smell influences our ability to tell how something tastes. A materials list, internet resources, standards, and safety practices are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, About the Editors, Introduction, Simple Graphing for Young Children, Science Teaching Boards and Boxes, Basic Materials List, and Index.
